Medusa (2020) Tony O’Connell and Earth Moves Community

This is the second full-size outdoor standing figure Toc built for Earthmoves. She was conceived as a guardian goddess to help protect the site from harm. This piece was built using ritual and semiotic materials.

The sculpture was assembled during the pandemic through online collaborative workshopping and individual contributions in the form of hair snakes made by many people, each built with secret internal offerings and dedications written on ribbons inside.

The project provided a creative connection and a voice for people who were isolated at the time, and now it is a permanent reminder of personal resilience and the importance of community.

The work speaks out against violence against women and the violence that is inflicted on the environment.

This sculpture has recently been restored.  She is now healed from the damaging effects of years of storms and frost.

She currently lives in a shrine we made for her in our no-dig remembrance garden.

Funded as one of the community projects for the lottery COVID Community Fund
